6th Brazilian Championship - 2010

Hello Spellfire players throughout the world, I invite everyone to attend the 6th Brazilian Championship - 2010 organized by the BSW Spellfire League - to be held in Curitiba-PR in 17 and July 18.
Our event includes two championships: one individual - with disputes of first and second phases, where all players are divided into groups of up to six people. In these groups everybody play against everybody and the top 2 from each group are selected for the next phase, this second stage is a double-elimination, where each player can loose once and still remain in competition.
The second championship is the doubles (2 persons together), where each state will have a representative "double" (2 persons together) making the race on Sunday morning.
This year we will give trophies to the champions and we will have a fellowship on Saturday night for all participants. All participants also receive two promo BSW cards for free.
Our events have drawn more and more players, last year we had 20 this year, our forecast is for 30 participants from seven different states, actually a magic ratio for our favorite card game. We will have facilities for our games and a visit to the sights of a city full of charms.
Schedule your arrival, and we will give you all necessary support for your stay, come and share your ideas and give prestige to the biggest event of Spellfire the world.

Beave and Jim were able to hold off players at the end of the tournament to win the main event on Saturday. Stars of the game were unexpectedly: Malaruat and Maleficent from 4th edition because some nasty avatars and monsters were in play.
Jim won the sealed event on Friday.
Bryan or Scott won the Share and Share Alike I think.

3rd Edition The Magister

I have tried a deck with him and:
Armor of Dispel Magic
Tak's Helmet of Power
Bag of Beans
Wand of TK
Ghost Crystal
Orb of Delight
Soul Searcher Medalion
Mace of Blood Drain

along with Cromlin to move things to him for relocation back to the hand. It hasn't gone quite as well as I would have hoped because our group isn't too sure how to deal with the Armor or the Mace being used and then popped back to the hand but that should get figured out soon. Spiffy card The Magister! Dust one off and try it today!

Past Gen Con World Champs?

18 players is the best in the last 4-5 years? I'm sorry to hear that. I was wondering that we, here in Budapest, could organize a "world championship" if we look only the number of players.

I organize a tournament every year, and 16-18 players come together nearly every event. This year's tourney was attended by few palyers, there was a little misunderstanding about the time of tourney, we had only 13 players.

FAQ section

Hey dude,
My helpful responses to your questions:

1) Are Fan Cards allowed in tournaments?

2) Are Fan Cards allowed in play?

3) What are the limits in creating my own cards?

4) Why are decks limited to 55 cards?

5) Where can I find the value of my cards?

6) How can I make my own cards?[/i]

***************
1) It depends on the tournament. I would recommend that you talk to the tournament judge before planning a deck with fan cards. As it stands the only fan cards that have been allowed in the big tournaments (Gen Con, Origins, Pentacon, et al) are the Online Boosters. But, even those are not used/banned in some of them. They are the only ones that have even a small amount of playtesting. That is needed, otherwise we would see cards like 'Russ wins next time he draws a card.' Its an event I do have waiting in my sideboard or cards. :)

2) Any fan cards are allowed to be played as long as all people playing know about them and agree to use them. Also, having access to the fan cards would be a plus.

3) The limits are your own imagination. Of course, making a card with an original idea is great. Plus, be mindful about how powerful a card is. The 'Russ wins next time he draws a card' event card sounds great for me, its not very fun for others. Create a balanced card that is fun for everyone and you'll up your chances of people letting you play it.

4)Decks are limited to 55 cards because the designers wanted to create game balance. Further limits on card types and the number packed in a deck followed due to this mentality. For a while there wasn't restrictions on the amount of a single card in your deck. I have read articles on this, but it couldn't have lasted very long (The example given was a deck with 55 Menzo's in it), because it was changed to 2 per deck, then after 3rd edition 1 per deck of any card with very few exceptions (the 3rd edition verison of the ally, War Party for example). There are rules for bigger deck sizes, but they are all divisible by a certain number (75 and 110 sizes have been in the rules since day one). Also, it is to insure that you have the equal opportunity to get your cards and not have to face an obviously faster paced 55 card deck when you have a monster 110 one.

5) Your cards are worth the value you place on them. Unlike other active games such as M:tg, Highlander, and World of Warcraft, Spellfire is a dead game. That put a great value on cards since they are not being printed anymore, but its only within a very small community within a small community that is CCG players. For example, I have played Spellfire since the game started. Others have not been as lucky as I have. I remember a kid wanting to buy some of my Set one booster sub set (of 25) cards from me for like $20 dollars each. I was thinking, "Man I have like 50 of these and I can't give them away. Plus, some of the biggest fanbase of active players now are from other countries (Brazil and Chili come to mind), some of which never had the access to a lot of the cards until after it stopped production. My Drizzt hero card is going to be worth a lot more to them than a fan in Southbend. Supply and Demand.
To answer your question, a good gauge is to see what is being sold on eBay at the moment. Chase cards are always the most expensive, then rare, uncommon, common, ect. Some are worth more than others. A Cold Cup is going to be worth more than a Psychometron of Nerad. How useful and how often is the card used in decks? This is the question you can ask yourself when pricing your cards. Steve Naus's website is the BEST place to buy cards and as perfect a price guide as you will find for Spellfire cards. Cold Cup and Bell of Might are the most expensive cards I've ever seen on eBay (I've seen both go for $100). I have seen the Ethereal Champion going for $50. Common or underused/underpowered chase have gone for $5-$10. Rares are about #3 and never more than $10. Uncommons have gone for as much as $1 to 50 cents, and commons are 10 to 25 cents. Again, this is my experience and I haven't looked for singles in a long time. Get what you can for them.

6) You can make your own cards by cutting out a piece of paper the size of a Spellfire card and tape/glue it to a card you aren't using, then write and draw all over it. Now if you want to get a bit more creative there are a lot of things you can do.
Photoshop or another computer graphics program will help you out tremendously. My first cards were photos I had taken, zoomed down to the size of a card and exposed in the darkroom and developed, then assembled together with dissected parts of other cards and icons, then color copied and slid into a sleeve behind a useless Magic card or something like that. Things have gotten better.
Years ago a great guy and Spellfire player named Oliver Hamm had all the icons available on a website of his, along with the Spellfire type font. At that point it's all cut and paste in Photoshop, then you're done. Print them out paste them onto some old commons. I like to use some spray adhesive on the back of the printed cards, stick the common cards behind the printed paper into the adhesive, press, dry, and exacto-knife cut out. I use photopaper and a color print set at best quality and the cards turn out amazing. But, this amount of attention isn't required to make playable cards. Some crayons, duc tape, and some useless Tomb Raider CCG cards and you can make a great fun card.

Hope my answers have helped you. Its great ot have a fan of Spellfire around. By far these aren't the 'offical' answers nor probably the only answers to some of them. But, hopefully good advice from a player how has been around the block a few times that has set you down the correct path.

Keep on playing!
